BriteGums® Gum Depigmentation in Midland Park, NJ

Pink, even-toned gums in a single visit

Dark, brown or blotchy gums can make you hide your smile, even when your teeth look great. BriteGums is a patented, minimally invasive treatment that removes the pigmented layer of gum tissue so your gums heal to one uniform, natural pink color.

Dr. Eric Veenstra is the first authorized BriteGums provider in New Jersey, and patients travel to our Midland Park office from across North Jersey and the New York City area, just 30 minutes from Manhattan.

The Permanent Solution for Dark and Blotchy Gums

For years, the only options for dark gums were abrasive "gum grinding," scalpel techniques or lasers. These remove surface pigment, but they can leave deeper pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) behind. Over time those cells repopulate the area, and the darkness comes back.

BriteGums works differently. It targets the melanocytes themselves, so once they are removed, the pigmentation typically does not return. That is why BriteGums is designed to be a permanent result, not a temporary touch-up.

Is BriteGums Right for &ou?

BriteGums may be a good fit if:

  • Your gums are dark, brown, purple or splotchy instead of pink
  • You feel self-conscious when you smile or laugh
  • You avoid photos or keep your lips closed when you smile
  • You want a fast, comfortable fix rather than repeated treatments
  • You already whitened or straightened your teeth and your gums still stand out

BriteGums is not for everyone. Your consult is where Dr. Veenstra confirms whether your gums are healthy enough for treatment and whether the discoloration is the type BriteGums treats.

What causes dark gums?

Gum color comes mostly from melanin, the same pigment that colors skin. Common causes include:

  • Genetics and natural melanin. People with more melanin in their skin often have darker gums. This is normal and healthy, and treating it is a purely cosmetic choice.
  • Smoking. Tobacco can stimulate pigment in the gums (sometimes called smoker's melanosis).
  • Certain medications.
  • Old silver (amalgam) fillings, whose particles can stain nearby tissue.

How the BriteGums Procedure Works

BriteGums uses specially designed, patented brushes that deliver radio waves through an FDA-cleared dental electrosurgery instrument. The brushes gently lift away the top pigmented layer of gum tissue. The technique is self-limiting, so it does not damage the deeper connective tissue, and no bleaching agents, scalpels or lasers are used.

BriteGums FAQs

What is BriteGums?

BriteGums is a patented gum depigmentation treatment that removes dark or blotchy pigment from the gums using specially designed brushes and radio waves. It is a single-visit cosmetic procedure that leaves gums one uniform, natural pink. In New Jersey, it is offered by Dr. Eric Veenstra at Veenstra Family Dental in Midland Park.

Is BriteGums permanent?

BriteGums is designed for permanent results. It removes the pigmented layer along with the melanin-producing cells, so in most patients the dark color does not return. Abrasion and some laser methods can leave deeper pigment cells behind, which is why their results often fade. Individual results vary.

Does BriteGums hurt?

Most patients describe BriteGums as practically pain-free. You stay awake and comfortable during treatment, and any tenderness afterward is usually managed with over-the-counter pain relievers for a few days.

How long does the procedure take?

The treatment visit takes about 2 hours. Most patients start with an online consultation and need only one follow-up visit after treatment to check healing.

How long until I see results?

New pink color usually starts to show within about 7 days, and healing is typically complete in 2 to 3 weeks.

Is there downtime?

Most patients return to their normal routine the same day.

Is BriteGums the same as gum bleaching?

No. BriteGums does not use bleach. Gum tissue cannot be bleached the way teeth can. BriteGums removes the pigmented surface layer so healthy pink tissue heals in its place.

Are dark gums unhealthy?

Usually not. Dark gums from natural melanin are healthy and normal, and treating them is a cosmetic choice. A sudden change in gum color, however, should be checked by a dentist.

How much does BriteGums cost in New Jersey?

Cost depends on the size of the treatment area and the amount of pigmentation. Dr. Veenstra gives you an exact price at your consultation, and financing is available.

Can I do my consultation online?

Yes. Most BriteGums patients begin with an online consult, so you can find out if you are a candidate before coming to the office.

Do I need to live near Midland Park?

No. We welcome BriteGums patients from across New Jersey, New York City and the surrounding area. With an online consult, one treatment visit and one check-up, travel is minimal.
